Part 11: South Africa - Shark-Cage Diving

8th January 2009
we woke up as early as 5am because it will take us another 45 minutes drive to go to our destination, Gaansbai for our experience of Shark Cage Diving!

shark-cage diving

we took it under the package from Shark Diving Unlimited that Wen found, R800 for shark-cage diving experience, one night stay in Hermanus Backpackers, breakfast, lunch, light snack on the boat, and all other equipments needed for diving (eg. towel, dive suit, goggles....)

signing "JOIN AT OWN RISK"

after signing our death note lol we had our breakfast. scrambled egg, sausages, hams, coffee/tea, muffin, toast bread.. american breakfast la.

hang out area

then we have a short briefing. the instructor told us that it is a LOW season now, and we might not even see a single shark today. they'll reschedule other days if we are unable to meet any sharks today. visibility is really low too, and the water is very calm. it's a hint that a storm is coming soon. calm before the storm. =( and to make things worse, the water is about 17 degrees Celsius.

(OH. MY. GOD) i'm already shivering standing there listening to the briefing, and now he tells me that the temperature of the water is 17 degrees Celsius?!?!?!?!?!

after briefing, we got on the boat and off we go!

getting off the shore

me and Wen

after about a 45 minutes ride off the shore, the boat stopped, in the middle of no where. then they start to churn the water with tunas and uses a very big tuna head (bigger than a human's head i tell you) as a bait to lure the sharks to come our way.

the workers churning the water and throwing the tuna head in the water

they churned the water for about 15 minutes. no sharks came. =( they then decide to go a little further and try our luck.

but right after 5 minutes on the stopped boat, that's when my worse nightmare came. SEASICK. and the stupid tuna smell all around the boat and IN the boat make things worse.

i couldnt talk. i couldnt turn my head too fast. i couldnt sit still. i couldnt stand up. and i cant smell the smelly tuna on the boat. i wanna VOMIT!

and vomit i did.

vomiting my breakfast

the thing about vomit is you'll be perfectly normal after that. i feel so much better. i can talk now. walk around the boat. laugh now. can even take pictures. hahahha

shu-min . ian . shu-wen

but after 5 minutes. the nausea feeling is here again.

getting ready for round two of vomit

after another 15 minutes, i VOMITED AGAIN!

later i got the chance to ask the instructor, how long will we stay here. answer: three to four hours. me: WHAT? !@#$%^&*() *faints*

in the whole 4 hours trip, yours truly vomited 6 times. =P

not to mention that it's really very cold. it's very very windy. i was shivering even before i touch the water. my teeth shivers automatically.

while i was keeping my self anti-seasick, the rest was watching others doing their cage diving.

shark

because i wasnt feeling very well after so much of vomiting and extreme coldness, i went as a last group for the shark cage diving. when i first touches the water, my thoughts are : omg. ice water ah? i tot 17 degrees Celsius? why this one like 7 degrees Celsius only? shark ah shark... faster come.. faster let me see you. i'm cold!

i even vomited once when i was inside the water *embarassing, i know* because i was wearing the diving goggles, i couldnt breathe using my nose. i gotta breathe using my mouth, and my mouth is busy shivering! and breathing using mouth, the air doesnt seem to be so fresh. furthermore, 17 degress k!! it's so cold. thus, i have difficulty in breathing suddenly. lol

we were in the water the longest. about 45 minutes total. we had the most sharks that came, but visibility wasnt that good as the sharks did not come very very very near us compared to other groups. the corner person in the first group said the shark actually knock the cage right beside him! =( jealousnya but i did manage to see the outline shadow of the sharks in front of me!

other groups doing shark cage diving

i cant wait to go back on shore when i was on the boat. i cant wait to be in somewhere stable and warm. i hoped for a fireplace!

together with our boat after everything

but after i touch shore, drank a cup of hot drink, and settle down, i miss the sharks. =P it was a nice experience despite the seasick!

photos of famous people that has done shark-cage diving here

but again, getting seasick is an experience too right? ;P

after our lunch, we went back to Hermanus to meet up with mum, telling her our experience while heading back to Stellenbosch.
